Starve the Flesh and Feed the Spirit by Dr. Tiffany Watkins

By Tiffany Watkins
Have you ever felt stagnant or at a standstill in your life? Have you ever felt as if you were meant for more, but did not know how to attain it?  In this article, I would like to discuss the concept of feeding the spirit while starving the flesh. In order to advance in God, it is essential that we are aware of what we are feeding our spirit on a daily basis.  It is okay to watch television. Although you should have fun and enjoy yourself, it should not take away time to feed your spirit. Our spirits need to be fed on a daily basis with the word of God, encouragement toward activities that are aligned with our purpose, and an environment conducive to productivity if we are to move leaps and bounds in the spirit realm and have a significant impact in the Kingdom.

This means prioritizing activities that nurture spiritual growth, such as prayer, meditation, and studying scripture, while limiting distractions that hinder progress. By doing so, we align ourselves with divine purpose and create a foundation for meaningful impact in both spiritual and practical aspects of life.

It means before you begin the day you have to consciously ask yourself, "What am I feeding my spirit today?” This daily reflection helps ensure that your actions and choices align with your spiritual goals. By prioritizing spiritual nourishment, you cultivate a mindset and heart that are prepared to face challenges, make wise decisions, and contribute positively to your community and purpose.  As a result of asking this question, you will also remain focused on not neglecting your time of prayer and reading with the Lord.  Keeping track of how much we feed our fleshly nature and how much we feed our spirit man on a daily basis will help us stay on track with our purpose and assignment.

Just like our bodies need water for survival our spirit needs to be poured in daily and sustain its growth. Without daily spiritual nourishment, we risk becoming spiritually dehydrated, which can lead to a lack of direction, strength, and resilience. Consistently feeding our spirit ensures we remain aligned with God's purpose, enabling us to thrive and fulfill our divine calling.

Psalm 42:1 says, "As the deer panteth for the water brooks, so pants my soul for you, O God." The verse describes a deep longing for something deeper, specifically God, not just for physical water. The thirst of the soul is symbolically depicted as a yearning for God, particularly in times of distress or unease. So, daily you fill yourself with His presence and seek His guidance. When you live in the one who lives within you, you will be filled with immeasurable peace, strength, and satisfaction.
