When the Deck is Stacked Against You by Adam Becker

By Adam Becker
There are times when justice seems to prevail, times if your due a reward you get it.  But it's not always like that.  Sometimes life just isn't fair. The Bible says, "I have seen something else under the sun. The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant, or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all. Ecclesiastes 9:11 It says that that the fastest don't always win the race or the strongest the battle. This is true in so many situations. It shouldn't be that way though it should only be fair that they do win the race and the battle.

Ecclesiastes 9:11

It says that that the fastest don't always win the race or the strongest the battle. This is true in so many situations. It shouldn't be that way though it should only be fair that they do win the race and the battle.  But someone can cheat can't they or things can go wrong. I don't know how many stories I have heard of injustices or people getting away with rotten things while others are convicted of things they didn't do. In life most certainly anything can happen.

Things should be fair though and if we work hard we should get our reward but often we may find the deck is stacked against us. I remember my days in high school as a teen.  Oh, what fond memories, well maybe not all memories.  Those teen years can be difficult and great all at the same time. But I remember in 9th or 10th grade I took a Home Economics class.  I loved that class; it was a break from lectures and homework.  I had fun and we cooked.  I liked to cook, and I also liked to eat so this class was a winner. Throughout the year we would have some paper tests periodically.  I thought the tests were easy and I knew the material after all this was a class I loved. But every time I would get a graded test back, I would get a "D" or an "F" on it.  I was perplexed, how could I do so poorly when I knew the material and loved the class? So, I started to compare my graded test to another classmates who got an "A" on her tests.  And you know what?  My answers were identical to hers.  At this I was blown away, it appeared that the teacher was marking my correct answers as wrong.  This happened all the time, so I knew this was no accident.  I didn't care that much about academics back then so I didn't call the teacher out on it.  I just took it as the way it is and carried on.  Later I learned that that teacher didn't like me and had a beef with me.  I didn't do anything to her she just heard that other teachers didn't like me, so she judged me and was trying to get me out of her class.  I have to admit I had a reputation for being a troublemaker back then, but in her class I was very well behaved and never gave her any trouble.  Looking back on it now I remember another class I had in which I knew I knew the material very well and yet I would always get a failing grade from the teacher on tests.  I would bet that that teacher also was purposely failing me.

I can also recall a time when my parents gave me a Nintendo game watch for my birthday when I was 14 years old.  It was a watch that you could play an electronic game on.  Back in the early 90s it was very cool, and I loved that watch very much.  One day while I was staying at a friend's house I put the watch down and left for a while leaving the watch at my friends. When I came back to get it, I found that a couple of the rubber buttons were ripped out of it.  This was no accident.  It took force to do that and could only have been done on purpose.  I was devastated.  I loved that watch and now it was broken.  My friend said he didn't know what happened to it and blamed a couple of his relatives who were there.  Years later I found out that it was my so-called best friend that broke the watch and he did it on purpose.  I also learned he didn't like me as much as I thought he did.  While those incidents are not something to dwell on and not the worst things that happened to me by far, they are examples of when things and people just seemed to be stacked against you.

When you earned something and don't get it when people shut you out of opportunities when others are just flat out to get you. We all have had things like that happen. And they are so unfair.  But we can't let it get us down and we can't believe that that is the end of the story.  The deck may be stacked against you but if you are a child of God justice is coming.  It can be so easy to think that there really is no justice in the world or balance but there is.  A belief that there is no justice may actually make things worse and cause justice to tarry.  You have to believe that God is going to turn things around and will act in some positive way.  You have to put your faith in God, not the circumstance.

Divine Justice

In the Bible there is this account of divine justice:

As soon as the word left the king's mouth, they covered Haman's face. Then Harbona, one of the eunuchs attending the king, said, "A pole reaching to a height of fifty cubits [b] stands by Haman's house. He had it set up for Mordecai, who spoke up to help the king." The king said, "Impale him on it!" 10 So they impaled Haman on the pole he had set up for Mordecai. Then the king's fury subsided. Esther 7:8-10

Haman, who was an evil man, kept trying to do bad towards Mordecai, even was going to impale him on a pole he had set up.  But God turned it around and Haman was impaled on the very pole he set up to impale Mordecai on.  God does believe in justice and there are many other pages in the Bible that speak of justice as well as reaping what you sow.

The deck may be stacked against you now, but it may not always be that way.  God can and will turn it around.  The Bible says, "He prepares a table before our enemies."  The Bible says if you are righteous you will be rewarded, and God will act on your behalf.  God is in control, it's not important who is against you or what is against it is more important who is for you. And the one for you is God Almighty!  There will be justice and you will get what you deserve and so will your enemies.  Hang in there.
