"I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have tribulation; but take heart ; I have overcome the world." John 16:33
How hopeless this life would have been for his followers, then and now, if these assuring words never came from Christ. I imagine that these words were a comfort to the apostles when Christ uttered them. These words till date are like a well that brews peace in the hearts of the faithful servants of the King of kings.
Most of us who pursue the discipleship of the Most High Creator and His Son, Christ tend to think that his way is made up of beds of roses. That's a wrong notion of what He came to start and complete (to live and teach righteousness). To put it straight, the discipleship or followership of Christ is a rocky one, thus the sharp contrast in the words of the verse above. The road to righteousness in this life is a difficult one and he was the first man to walk through it (Eye witnesses attested to that in the gospels). The import of that ending remark is that, in the midst of all these difficulties or frailties, He has been a shining example to them and us and a proof that they or we can also attain this righteousness in spite of the difficulties.
In other words, He confirmed to them and us that, in this world they or we will face difficulties in pursuing righteousness but they or we should have no fear because He has overcome all these difficulties or frailties or troubles. He made himself the example and He expects them and us to follow in His lead.
So with all these troubles and evil and misfortune that surround us, if we should have complete trust in His leadership, we should be able to have and experience certain peace diverse from any peace anyone or thing can offer in this life. Peace that's free from jealousy, envy, covetousness, greediness, strife, competition, sexual immorality, lies and all forms of wickedness and cruelty. A perfect peace made up of love, righteousness and contentment.
This is the peace that we find in the way of our Master, the Creator of all things. This peace I wish for us all who, with all our human strength and might, endeavor be in His way. Amen
