Discovering Breakthrough for Your Life by John Belt

By John Belt
Have you ever found yourself in need of a breakthrough? Maybe you need one now. I cannot begin to tell you how many times breakthrough has been needed and found in my life. Breakthrough comes in so many different forms. It can be personal or for others. But in every case it is about God breaking in to a situation to break us out into a better place! The other day I was planting "herb" seeds with my son. I cannot remember the last time I did any gardening – but I was amazed at just how small these seeds were. They were ridiculously tiny!

Then I thought of the time where Jesus told us that if we had faith the size of a "mustard seed," the tiniest of all seeds, that we could cast a mountain into the sea – virtually nothing would be impossible for us. I find that extremely encouraging to know that it is really not about the size of your faith – but that you are "faith-ful" with the faith that God has already deposited inside of you. Be encouraged that what is impossible with man is possible with God. Our God specializes in the impossible!

The term "breakthrough" has been used many times in certain Christian circles. But what does it mean? Is it legitimate and do we need really need it? We find some reference for it in the Book of Second Samuel.

2 Samuel 5:20 "So David went to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there; and he said, 'The LORD has broken through my enemies before me, like a breakthrough of water.' Therefore he called the name of that place Baal Perazim."

The context of this passage is where King David is seeking the Lord about whether he should go up against the Philistines in battle. The Lord responds with an affirmative "YES" promising to give them into David's hands. Here we find David's response to the victory that God had given him over the Philistines. It reminds me of the verse where it is said in Isaiah – When the enemy comes in… "like a flood" the Lord will raise up a standard against him. Depending on how you read this you might think it is the flood of the enemy, but on the contrary, it is the Lord's flood of waters in breakthrough.

We can see this when David says, "The Lord has broken through… LIKE a breakthrough of water." In the same way Moses knew the power of the Presence of the Lord saying, "Unless your Presence goes with us… we are not going anywhere". (paraphrased)

Exodus 33:15 "Then he said to Him, 'If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here.'"

Breakthrough is intimately tied to the waters of God's Spirit or Presence. Another verse associated with this would be found in Zechariah.

Zechariah 4:6 So he answered and said to me: "This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: 'Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,' says the LORD of hosts."

Do We Need Breakthrough

The Hebrew word for broken through is "paras" which means, in simplest terms, "to break out." Then "perez" is the word for breakthrough which when expanded can mean breaking forth, a breach, bursting forth or outburst. This can find so many applications in our lives and things regarding the Kingdom of God in relation to how God wants to breakthrough for us and others.

A definition for breakthrough would be when God comes in through the power or waters of His Spirit to breakthrough in an area that would be an impossibility for man to accomplish. In simple terms. when we recognize that we need God's help in our lives what we are really saying is we need His power to breakthrough in a situation. We need the waters of His Spirt and of His Presence to burst forth to see victory in whatever it may be.

Do we need breakthrough? The answer is always yes. On a personal level, we always need more of God's Presence in our lives. The greatest amount of heaven on earth that we've experienced is still just the tip of the iceberg compared to the fullness of the glories of heaven. Jesus told us to pray His Kingdom come and will done on earth as it is in heaven – so we will always need a greater manifestation of God's glory in the earth, both personally and that others may have an encounter with God. Therefore, we absolutely need more breakthrough and continually. Only our apathy and ignorance would tell us otherwise. Breakthrough is an essential need as God is always wanting to come in greater power and glory. Know that He also wants to use you as someone to disperse the knowledge of His glory in the earth.
