The Parable of the Curly Hair by Amber Picota

By Amber Picota
This might *seem* like an article about my hair, but it's NOT. I'm here to discuss the prophetic parable of returning to my natural curls through the Curly Girl Method. The gist of Curly Girl Method (which I shall henceforth refer to as CGM) is that you cut out hair products that contain harmful ingredients because those ingredients prohibit the hair from absorbing what your hair really needs. Those particular chemicals create short-term shine because they coat your hair, but that coating blocks what you need for long-term hair health.

THAT ALONE WILL PREACH. Sometimes the things we want in the short term give us comfort in the moment but hinder us from the long term goals and vision that we have for our life! Ok let me get back on target here. That was a side-sermon to my actual message.

When I decided to revive my natural curls, it got kind of ugly first. My hair didn't know it's natural coil. It didn't have a curl pattern because of the damage, because of straightening for so long, and because of the harmful products I had been using. Even after switching to better hair products, it took time for my hair to heal.

Recovering and Healing is a Journey

Some of us have gone through some crap that DAMAGED US. Some of y'all have been ABUSED. Recovering and healing is a journey. You may not be in that situation that damaged you anymore. Maybe the abusive people have already been removed and you look at yourself, at your life, and you think "This still ain't pretty. This is not where I want to be." Well hang in there because healing takes TIME.

When doing CGM journey, removing the damaging products is not enough. You also have to begin applying products that HEAL and begin to reverse the damage. Hair masks and scalp treatments that contain helpful, healing ingredients are essential in your CGM journey.

Likewise, removing ourselves from the damaging environment with the abusive people is IMPORTANT, but what really fuels our healing journey is intentional healing. That can look like a lot of things, including but not limited to: true self care, inner healing, prayer, therapy, attending a healthy loving church, having healthy relationships, worship, & meditation.

Coming Home to Yourself

The thing is, the longer I've been intentional about healing my hair, the more I began to see it coil into smoother, more defined curls. With every month that passes, I learned what products my hair craved to heal and which ones helped make my curls pop.

Similarly, as you begin to heal from trauma, it feels like you're coming home to yourself. You start to discover the you that God originally created you to be, before circumstances wounded you into someone else. You begin to see a natural beauty in the you that God created you to be. You begin to bloom into the authentic true self that God designed you to be.

And it feels good.

But it didn't always feel good.

In the beginning it was kind of messy and ugly. It took time and intentionality to heal.

Hang in there; keep removing yourself from toxic situations and placing boundaries for abusive people. Keep participating in practices that bring healing to you. This won't last forever. Happier days are ahead.
