Get Out of Fear and Into Love by Doug Addison

By Doug Addison
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV Fear is a spirit and not always an emotion. You can be afraid of something without having the spirit of fear. The spirit of fear causes you to overreact. You can be afraid of things like spiders, roller coasters or scary movies. The spirit of fear takes a normal fear and elevates it. The goal is to get you out of faith. It gets you to pull back from trusting God and others. The keys to recognizing this are that you are short-tempered, get stressed and start to doubt the Lord. This is not what Jesus has in mind for us.

Fear is a Spirit

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV

Fear is a spirit and not always an emotion.

Bad Things from God?

“‘An enemy did this,’ he (Jesus) replied.” Matthew 13:28 NIV

God’s character is pure love. He is not angry with you, and He loves you beyond what you might realize.

God does not want to kill you, make you sick or punish you. He did not bring sickness into the world.

God is not a dictator and allows us free will, so yes, bad things can happen because of people who don’t have the love and heart of the Lord.

What is the Fear of God?

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Proverbs 9:10 NIV

Fearing God is having reverent respect. It is not being afraid He will punish you if you mess up.

We can be forgiven of our sins by grace, but the fear of the Lord causes us to not want to sin.

Attack Against the Greatest Command of the Lord

The greatest commandment is to love God with all your heart, soul and mind, and to love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:35-40).

Satan has launched an all-out attack to get us angry at God or to blame Him for bad things.

We can fall into believing lies about ourselves and have emotional wounds in our souls. Being angry at God is evidence of the spirit of fear being present.

The Root of the Attack

When we get out of alignment with the greatest commandment, we open the door for the spirit of fear to operate freely.

  • Anger toward God will try to separate you from Him.
  • Anger toward others brings judgments.
  • Anger toward ourselves brings self-hatred, low self-esteem and rejection.
God Wants to Bless You

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. James 1:17 NIV

Prayer: Lord, bring healing in the three areas of love—loving You, loving others and loving ourselves.

Get Filled with God’s Love

Dear friend, I hope all is well with you and that you are healthy in body as you are strong in spirit. 3 John 2 NLT

Fear, doubt, stress and our overloaded lifestyles can leave little margin. It can weaken our bodies, emotions and relationships.

It is God’s will to bless you and for you to be healthy and whole.

Tormentors of Fear

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.” 1 John 4:18 NKJV

John tells us that there is no fear in love but “perfect love” casts out fear.

It is possible to have tormentors of fear assigned to you.

This does not mean you are possessed; it is demonic oppression.

Symptoms of Tormentors

  • You find yourself dreading or pulling back.
  • You have negative thoughts about yourself or others.
  • You feel that your situation is unchangeable.
  • You have unbelief that God can change you.
  • You often experience anxiety, stress or panic.
Filling Your House

“Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself …” Matthew 12:44-45 NIV

Jesus told that parable about a man who drove out a demon, cleaned up his house and it went and got seven more and overtook the house.

This is not to scare you that you now have eight demons, this shows that you have to fill your spiritual house with love and the Holy Spirit.

Ask the Lord to Fill You

Prayer:

Lord, fill me with Your perfect love. Show me if I have open doors or pathways the enemy has been using. Reveal what Satan does not want me to see about my situation. Release Your perfect love into my life.

Your Word says that perfect love casts out fear. I repent for any time I have not operated in perfect love. I ask that You remove the tormentors of fear. Cast out the spirit of fear and all associated demons. I take full authority in Jesus’ name!

What to Do Next

This will start the process for most people, but sometimes the spirit of fear can have deep roots in our lives. It might take time to uproot things that have deeper inroads.

You will need to develop a lifestyle of renewing your mind daily!

Blessings,
