Take the Plunge Into His Waters by John Belt

Psalm 63:5 "My soul will be satisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth will praise You with joyful lips." We live in a society that is geared to look for satisfaction in so many things – whether it is in what they have, where they live, a title, power or who they are associated with. But there is only one place we can find contentment and our true identity. That place and person is God Himself. When you truly find satisfaction in the Presence of God nothing else really matters. One of the Ten Commandments is "thou shalt not covet." What is covetousness? It is the yearning to possess something and never being satisfied with what you have. It is a continual cycle of dissatisfaction.

Psalm 63:5 "My soul will be satisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth will praise You with joyful lips."

We live in a society that is geared to look for satisfaction in so many things – whether it is in what they have, where they live, a title, power or who they are associated with.

When you covet you lose sight what God has blessed you with, then look for more. You begin to compare yourself, your life and your situation with other people – then you feel like what you have isn't good enough. When you do this it is the beginning of the end.

Isaiah 55:1 "Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters."

Contentment with godliness is great gain. (1 Timothy 6:6) Where does contentment come from? It is found in a life that is abiding in Christ, walking with God in the cool of the day. There is nothing more powerful than refreshment. Everybody has experienced thirst on a hot day. On a hot and dry day it is so refreshing to have a drink of cold water. It is like the Nestea plunge! If you are not familiar with this – there was a commercial on TV when I was a kid that I never forgot. It was people falling into a swimming pool backward because the tea that they had just drunk was so refreshing! They were so happy and smiling because of the refreshing experience they just had. That is the way it is when we get a drink of His Holy Spirit – it is totally refreshing! In that moment nothing else matters except for the drink. If you feel discontented you really need to ask yourself if you have had a drink of His Holy Spirit lately. God is the satisfier of our souls. He is the living water that we need.

Coveting the Presence of God

There is a context where it is ok to covet! You can covet the Presence of God. You can covet spiritual gifts. (1 Cor. 12:31) Why you can covet everything that can help you grow in your walk with God. God is not trying to take everything away but give you that which truly satisfies. He wants to redirect your affections toward the things of heaven. A matter of fact He says that if you will seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness all the things that the Gentiles seek will be given to you! (Matthew 6:32-33) How about that?

Isaiah 44:3-4 "For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, and floods on the dry ground; I will pour out My Spirit on your descendants, and My blessing on your offspring; and they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses."

Do you think Jesus might be encouraging us to turn our hearts toward the things that really matter – even heavenly things? That is exactly the case. He knows that every blessing you can imagine will be poured out on your life as you give your all to Him. (Mal. 3:10) With a materialistic mindset you may end up with stuff and be sad. But if you embrace a Kingdom mindset you will receive of His Presence and then have over and above all that you can imagine! The blessing will be that your heart treasure will be on the things that are eternal – you will be storing up heavenly reward while you are being extremely blessed on the earth. It is a win/win – even a double win! And the good news is He has called you to win. Take Him up on the offer for you will not regret it!

Keep your eyes on the Lord, seeking His face, for He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him! (Hebrews 11:6)
