Knowing Who You Are & What You Have in God by John Belt

By John Belt
At this point in the story we see how Satan has successfully engaged Eve in conversation, something she should have not been available for in the first place. Now we see how the serpent goes for the juggler vein, going for the kill if you will. Now he tempts Eve with the prospect of God being a liar and that she will be enlightened becoming like God.  It is the temptation, the delusion of her having something better than what she currently has. The serpent is saying, "Oh! The grass is greener on the other side and what you have is really nothing at all!" This is the false promise of better things when she already had it all.

Genesis 3:4 Then the serpent said to the woman, "You surely will not die! For God knows that on the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

He Called God a Liar

At this point in the story we see how Satan has successfully engaged Eve in conversation, something she should have not been available for in the first place. Now we see how the serpent goes for the juggler vein, going for the kill if you will. Now he tempts Eve with the prospect of God being a liar and that she will be enlightened becoming like God.  It is the temptation, the delusion of her having something better than what she currently has. The serpent is saying, "Oh! The grass is greener on the other side and what you have is really nothing at all!" This is the false promise of better things when she already had it all. She already had life apart from death. She was already created in the image of God, being like God. What she would really see was her own fallen self, falling under the influence of the devil and that is exactly what happened.

Our Perception of God

The whole idea the enemy had was to twist her perception of God. If he could do that he would become her best friend. It was seduction into her believing the devil was telling the truth and God was telling a lie.

This is just how important it is for us to know God's nature, to have a proper perspective on what He is like. God sent His only Son to make the picture completely clear. When we look at Jesus we see the nature of the Father. We see what God is like. Jesus went about doing good.  (Acts 10:38) He is the Way, the Truth and the Life.

John 1:14 The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, the glory as the only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.

We don't need to look any further than Jesus to see what God would do, what He would act like and how He would handle things. Jesus came as God in the flesh to give us the exact picture of God. He is the Tree of Life that we can take and eat of. God never forbade Adam & Eve from eating of the tree of life in the garden, only the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Because God is good He gives choice. He doesn't want robots but relationship with His own creation that chooses to be with Him.

Realize What You Have in God

As well we need to know who we are and what He has given to us. On the other side of the cross we are born again of the Holy Spirit. We are the righteousness of God in Christ. In Christ we have all things. We are part of the family of God being adopted as sons and daughters of God. God has given us His vast inheritance without limitation because we are grafted into the family. He has also given us of His Holy Spirit, His promises and His authority. This is who we are in Him. This is what we have in Him. Esau despised his birthright inheritance selling it out to his brother Jacob for a bowl of chili.

Hebrews 12:16 ....lest there be any sexually immoral or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected. For he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.

He gave up the blessing of God for his own fleshy appetites. Because he did not value what he had, the inheritance of his father, it was given away cheap for someone what actually did treasure it. Esau did not really understand and value the place he held and the inheritance he was scheduled to receive.

Realize what you have in God. He is worth your believing, your trust, your pursuit and your persistence.

Hebrews 6:11-12 We desire that every one of you show the same diligence for the full assurance of hope to the end, so that you may not be lazy, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
