God's Perfect Provision for Every New Season by Becky Harling

Early this morning, in my time with Jesus, I was thinking back on some of the changing seasons Steve and I have gone through in our marriage. There was the season we lived in Africa for almost two years, the season when we enjoyed a very stable pastoral ministry, and the season when we transitioned out of pastoral ministry and into the world of missions. There have been seasons where we traveled internationally and seasons where we've done more ministry here in the States.

There have been seasons where we traveled internationally and seasons where we’ve done more ministry here in the States.

When we moved to Africa with a ten-month-old baby, I didn’t know how we would survive. The heat, the war going on in the country—all of it felt overwhelming. But God provided.

When we left the very stable church in upstate New York to accept a call to serve a church in California, I didn’t know how we would survive. It was rough, I’m not going to lie. But God provided dear friends to walk the journey with us.

When we left the church in Denver to move to the Springs, I didn’t know how we would buy a house, but God provided.

As I reflected on these many changing seasons, one thought echoed through my mind: God has provided, and He has been faithful.

In the book of Joshua, there is a tiny verse that has a huge impact on your life and mine. “The day after Passover, that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land… the manna stopped” (Joshua 5:11–12). That phrase jumped off the page at me this morning, and I circled the words, “the manna stopped.”

When Joshua led the people into the promised land, after they celebrated Passover, God stopped the manna. The provision of manna was for their 40 years in the wilderness. Now, in the new land, in the new season, God would provide for them from the produce of the land they worked.

As I’ve reflected on that verse all morning, I think there are some implications for you and me:

We don’t need to fear changing seasons. God goes with us into every new season. His presence gives us the confidence to move into new seasons. Over and over in the book of Joshua, you hear him telling Joshua, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be discouraged, do not be afraid, for the Lord your God goes with you wherever you go!” (Joshua 1:9).

The old has to disappear if the new is going to come. Often, we want to cling to what feels secure and safe, but in order to receive the new provision, we have to let go. That, my friends, often involves risk! In my life, I have noticed that when God calls me to something new, He doesn’t seem to show me all the details of how He will provide. He simply calls me to let go. Only when I’m willing to let go and trust Him do I receive the peace that comes with new provision.

Remembering builds our trust muscles for the future. When you spend a few moments remembering how God has provided in the past, your soul is strengthened to trust God’s future provision. This is why God instructed Joshua to set up stones of remembrance when he parted the waters of the Jordan River (Joshua 4:1–7). God knew if the people remembered, they would more easily trust Him for the next provision. The same principle holds true in your life and mine. Remembering builds our trust muscles.

Friend, every new season holds new provisions. Step forward with confidence, knowing that God has it all.
