Greater than Thought by Brian Turner

By Brian Turner
Scripture has many verses and passages about the power of our thoughts. One such verse is Proverbs 23:7, "For as he thinks in his heart, so is he." This verse is simple yet profound. It teaches a person is her thoughts. Whatever a person is manifesting in life is due to that person's thoughts. Outward reality is a product of inward reality. What is happening in the mind is happening in the world of experience. If this is true, then it is imperative for a person to be intentional about what she is thinking. The quality of her life is then boiled down to the quality of her thought life. The better her thought life; the better her actual life.

While it may be true that a person is her thoughts, there is a higher truth. The higher truth undergirds and causes this lesser truth to operate. A person can only be equal to her thoughts because she is greater than her thoughts.

Think about this for just a moment. Can a thought know its own existence? Is there a way a thought can get out of itself and observe itself? The answer to both questions is an emphatic, "No!" A thought cannot know its own existence. A thought cannot observe itself. For a thought to be known, there must be a knower of the thought. There must be an observer of the thought. A thought cannot know itself nor can a thought observe itself. There is a greater entity that knows and observes. This greater knower and observer is the real person, which decides the thoughts to identify with. A thought cannot decide anything. Only the person behind the thought can make a conscious choice about what to think or not to think.

Now, someone may say, "Thoughts occur in the mind; therefore, it is the mind, which knows thought." While this assumption seems correct at first glance, it is not correct at all. The mind is a tool. The mind does not create thought. The mind is used to create thought. The mind does not know its own existence. The mind is known and observed by the same knower and observer that knows and observes thought. Much like a painter holds a paint brush to create a landscape on a canvas a person uses the tool of the mind to create, observe, or discard thought. The mind is not the greater entity. The greater entity is the person wielding the mind as a tool.

A person is greater than her thoughts because a person uses the mind as a tool to choose to which thoughts she will have equality. In this regard, a person is as she thinks in her heart. A person is not a slave to thought. A person is the master of her thoughts. A person can choose what to do with her thoughts because she is greater than her thoughts, and it is this greatness that gives her the ability to be equal to her thoughts – if she so chooses.

Yet Another Layer

Here's another astounding layer to this truth: a person is never in conflict with her thoughts, and at the same time, she is free from her thoughts. A person is never in conflict with her thoughts because whatever she is thinking she is choosing to think. Even if the thought is negative or depressing, she is never in conflict with the thought because she is choosing the thought. A person cannot be in conflict with what she chooses. She may realize she is thinking something she does not want to think, but if she continues thinking the thought, she is choosing the thought. By doing so, she can never insist she is in conflict with her thoughts.

At the same time, she is free from her thoughts. If she is greater than her thoughts, then her thoughts have no power over her. No matter what kind of thought she is having at any given moment she is always greater than the thought, whether positive or negative. Thoughts are like bricks, which she uses to build. If she stacks the bricks and creates something hideous to look at, so what, she is only observing the creation. If she stacks the bricks and creates something beautiful, so what, she is only observing the creation. She can either observe, destroy, recreate, or just enjoy the creation. But she could also decide to live into what she created and decide to be equal to her thought creation. The choice is hers, and it is hers because she is greater than her thoughts, without conflict with her thoughts, and free from her thoughts. Only she decides she will be as her thoughts.

Of course, it makes sense that it is better to think good and positive thoughts than to think negative and bad thoughts. Only a person who did not realize she was greater than her thoughts would decide to consciously allow herself to be terrorized by negative thoughts. A person who knows she is greater than her thoughts can stand back from her negative thoughts and just observe them. She can disconnect herself from them and just hold them in her mind like holding marbles and rolling them around in her hand. They are there. She can observe them, but she can choose not to be emotionally involved with them. Why? She is greater than her thoughts. She can consciously create distance from her thoughts without having conflict with them and remaining free from them. She is truly greater than her thoughts.

Yet, she can also decide to discard and put away her thoughts just like putting marbles away. It's really that simple, especially for someone who truly knows she is greater than her thoughts. Then she can create the thoughts she wants to think and create her own equality with them. Once she knows her freedom from her thoughts, her thoughts are no longer a problem for her. Her life will then become peaceful and what she truly chooses and creates.

Learning to think on heavenly things as Scripture teaches (Colossians 3:2) is a means to an end not the end itself. Renewing the mind (Romans 12:2) is also a means to an end but not the end itself. The end is a truth that sets the captive free (John 8:32). The result of obeying these Scriptures is to realize the freedom of being greater than thought. This freedom is knowing where the greatness lies. The greatness is not in thought but in the person. The person is the observer. The person is the knower. The person is not physical but spiritual. It is not the body. It is not the mind. It is spirit. "For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him?" (1 Corinthians 2:11, NKJV). Greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world (1 John 4:4). To realize that one is spirit, a co-creator with God in Christ through Holy Spirit, is the greatness to which these Scriptures are pointing. Now go. Grab the canvas of your mind and paint the thoughts you choose to manifest. May your life be a masterpiece.
